Which macOS version is installed?
- Software download library for vintage Mac software. Getting a beige Mac up and running can be very challenging these days. Older software updates are very hard to find, and of course you need Stuffit to download Stuffit:) This web page is my attempt at getting everything you could ever need together in.
- This Internet Archive emulated item contains a 25MB Macintosh formatted disk image with an install of Mac System 7.5.3. From Wikipedia: 'System 7.5.3, a major bug-fix update that also included Open Transport for other PowerPC-based machines as well as some 68k-based machines. 7.5.3 also made several improvements to the 68k emulator, and added translucent dragging support to the Drag.

From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose About This Mac. You should see the macOS name, such as macOS Mojave, followed by its version number. If you need to know the build number as well, click the version number to see it.

Which macOS version is the latest?
These are all Mac operating systems, starting with the most recent. When a major new macOS is released, it gets a new name, such as macOS Catalina. As updates that change the macOS version number become available, this article is updated to show the latest version of that macOS.

Mac OS 7 was a major change from the earlier System Software, introducing integrated multitasking, a revamped desktop, networking, and transitioning the name from 'Macintosh System Software' To 'MacOS'. It was followed by by MacOS 8.x.
Running Mac OS 7.x requires a Motorola 68000 based Macintosh, a supported model of Power PC based Macintosh (7.1 or later) or one of the following emulators:

Release 7.6 was the first version to officially use the name 'Mac OS'. 7.6 increases support for PPC based Macintosh computers and includes OpenDoc.
Applications that require 24-bit addressing will no longer run under this version.
